Poker player tracking does help at chaotic online micro/low limit holdem cash games

April 13, 2009 · Posted in Micro and low stakes poker

As you probably know, one of the important aspects of poker is knowing your opponents. When it comes to playing online multitable poker at low and micro stakes No limit Texas Holdem Full Ring cash games, this is true aswell.

If you are playing online at micro and low limit holdem tables on regular basis, you know it already. If not, let me just say this:

Micro stakes and low limit NL holdem online cash games are chaos, Expect everything.

In order to beat that chaos, you need as much information as possible about your opponents, in other words: you need to know who are you up against.

Among other things, you need to know what moves are your poker opponents capable of doing, how are they playing their nuts, are they having a hard time folding a second pair on dangerous flop, are they committing them self on weak hands, how aggressive are they, how many hands and which hands do they play, how often do they raise and reraise pre-flop,…

Taking notes at online poker tables is one way of tracking poker players

One way of getting this information is by observing how your opponents play poker and then taking notes on what you see.

So, if you see a player from early position going all in for 13 $ at NL 25 holdem tables twice in 10 hands, then this is definitely something you should note. Or, if you see a short stacker moving all in from BB position with pocket Fives against a Button stealer, I am sure this will help you next time, when you find yourself on a Button, holding pocket Tens, and this same Short Stacker moves all in on you, thinking this is a steal situation and his AJs is good there.

All of the major online poker rooms provide you with some sort of notes taking system as part of their poker software. From what I have seen until now, my favorite is Full Tilt Poker room Notes taking system, which allows you to choose a colour mark for your opponents as well.

Using poker player tracking software is another

While poker notes are very useful when it comes to noticing strange, unusual or perhaps abnormal, irrational things about online poker players, poker player tracking software is another source of powerful information.

If you are multi tabling, which means you play holdem poker at 4 or more tables at once, then using poker player tracking software, that provides you with live data about your opponents from poker software database, is definitely a must. Why you may ask?

Well, since you are playing more hands at once, you do not have time to take notes on all players, which means you will find yourself playing against an opponents, where you have no notes at all. In those cases, poker player tracking software will give you a nice overall poker profile about your opponent, thus providing information about how passive/aggressive and loose/tight certain player is.

Another important reason for using poker player tracking software is to improve your own poker play. Since all the hands are stored automatically in your poker database, you can review all the pots and hands you played (won or lost) after the sessions and identify whether you played those hands correctly, too aggressively or perhaps too passively,…

Information costs money: Use it since you pay for it

It certainly helps to know a difference between a fully stacked player, who is playing every second hand and raising every third one, and another fully stacked player, who is playing 10 percent and raising 3 percent of the hands.

Or if you wish, a difference between a short stacker, who is playing 12 percent and raising 10 percent of the hands, and another short stacker who is playing 7 percent and raising 7 percent of the hands.

Combining these two ways of tracking online poker players at low limit holdem will increase your chances of making good calls on the river, good folds on the turn, in general: It will help you make more correct decisions and therefore increase your win rate.

Although I’m sure software will help your win rate, would it not make more since to use that money to move up to a higher level?

If you are currently grinding at micro limits, then building your bankroll first is probably the best thing to do.

But as you progress up to NL25 ($0.1/$0.25 blinds), the pots get quite big. Additional information, provided by poker tracking software, can therefore save or gain you a stack or two in just one session. That means that your investment in this kind of software pays of very quickly.

By my opinion, the poker tracking software is a must for online multitablers in the long run.
