Using VPIP and PFR poker tracker stats to determine our opponent’s preflop hand ranges

March 20, 2009 · Posted in Texas Holdem poker tips

Use this information on your own resposibility.

It is based on my experience of playing online poker with poker player Jandro Mura from Mexico, who as far as I remember, played mostly with big stack, and on my interpretation of stats, recorded by Poker tracker software.

Poker tracker database includes 900 hands he played between 2.december 2008 and 10.march 2009 at low limit 0.1/0.25 NL Texas Holdem Full Ring tables at Full Tilt Poker site.

I will begin by taking a look at two of the most basic poker statistical indicators, so called VPIP and PFR, recorded by the Pocker tracker software, to try to get a feel of what hands can I expect him to play pre-flop with:

What is his raising and reraising range?

VPIP – Voluntarily put money into the pot: 19.56 %

PFR – Raised pre-flop: 10.56 %

Considering his PFR only, I would assume he will be open raising or just raising my limp with hands like AJo+, A9s+, Q10s+, KQo and with all pocket pairs above and including 77, maybe even below.

He will probably be reraising my pre-flop raise with pocket Aces, pocket Kings, most of the times with pocket Queens aswell and I think sometimes from position with AKo+, maybe even looser, like pocket Jacks or pocket 10.

With what poker hands is he cold calling raises behind?

As far as cold calling goes: I can expect him to call my raise behind with any pocket pair, hoping to kill my big over pair or top pair top kicker with a set on the flop. He will probably do the same with hands like K10o and suited aces. There may be situation, when he will cold call behind with bih pocket pairs like pocket Jacks and higher.

What is his limping in with?

Based on his VPIP and the difference between PFR and VPIP, I will almost certainly see him limp behind me or open limp from early positions with low pocket pairs and drawing hands like suited aces, high suited kings and other suited connectors and gap cards, like 10Js, J9s, 109s, 108s. That goes especially for multi way pots from strong positions like Button, Cutoff and late middle positions.

If I gamble a little bit, I could say he is limp/calling alot from early positions, most probably with low pocket pairs, maybe even with high suited connectors, but so far I can not give any firm conclusions.

The conlcusion?

Anyways, that percentage of VPIP and PFR, is by my opinion very loose, especially if you multitable, and I have seen him multitabling, so some of those hands he raises with, are not so strong to commit your stack on them pre-flop.

So what I wonder is, how to play profitably preflop against the poker player with this kind of PFR and VPIP? Which hands do we play against him and how do we play this hands? Is there a difference if we play as short stack or with full buyin?

Any ideas? Post it, please! …feel free to correct my assumptions aswell!

More about Jandro Mura in my next posts, where I will go through some other stats and review some of his known and unknown hand histories, played from various positions and versus various opponents. Stay in touch!
